What is your creative process when making music?
Dr Space- It depends on the band and or project that I am engaged in. With my main band,
Øresund Space Collective (ØSC), we play totally improvised prog space rock music, so we just
gather in the studio, sometimes with an idea and often, not, and just create and see what happens.
The guys are all top musicians and very good listeners and not scared to try crazy ideas. With my
duo in Portugal, Doctors of Space , featuring Martin Weaver (Dark, Wicked Lady fame), we also
improvise but due to it only being two people the dynamics are different. Martin used to play guitar,
bass and drum machines and I would do all the synths but now we have become most electronic
but are also experimenting with drum machines, didgeridoo, acoustic guitars etc.. We also have no
limits. Aural Hallucinations , is a project I have with Matt (Kind drummer, ex Elder) from
Massachusetts. We have been making our music in layers until recently when we were able to be
in the same room and make music.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Dr Space- There are a lot of people I would love to work with as I like so many kinds of music. I
am friends with White HIlls (played live with them 3 times) and Temple Fang. I think both of these
groups we would be able to make something new and exciting. I have a series of albums called
DR Space´s Alien Planet Trip where I invite different guitar or bass players to add layers to synth
pieces that I have laid down… I have been in contact with Ed Mundell for years about doing it and
he said yes, nothing yet. Also, Frank Marino, who is one of my all time fave guitar players, I would
love to make music with him.. You never know in this digitally connected world.
Who has been your most influential teacher or mentor?
Dr Space- I have had a few. One was my old friend Doug Walker from Alien Planetscapes, who left
us 20 years ago now. I still miss him and he was a huge inspiration for me. My friends and
musicians who I play with in ØSC, Hasse Horrigmoe and Jonathan Segel, are also extremely
important people in my musical world as is Martin Weaver. All three are incredible musicians that
play many instruments. This is very inspiring to me. I am very lucky to make music with such
amazing people and players…
Do you prefer to work alone or collaboratively?
Dr Space- Although I do make and release solo synthesizer music under the name Dr Space, I for
sure prefer to make music with other people and have released many collaborative records
including last years, Lamp of the Universe meets Dr Space and the recent Quasars of Destiny , with
my cousin Craig Wall.
What are your favourite venues to perform at?
Dr Space- In Denmark, one of the best clubs is Loppen in Christiana. Just a great intimate place
with great sound and nice people. Every year in May, we play concerts on a boat in Hamburg and
this is unlike any of our other gigs and very special. The Little Devil in Tilburg, NL, despite the
stage being too small for us is also a really fun place.. Great fans..
What inspires you as an artist?
Dr Space- Mainly other musicians and music that I hear….. I live in a very inspiring place with
amazing views and very peaceful. I also get very inspired when I get a new synthesizer or module,
as this opens new musical avenues for me to explore.
Do you have trouble with performance anxiety And how do you overcome it?
Dr Space- No… I used to do a lot of public speaking and am used to being in front of audiences
and with most all my projects, we are just going on a musical journey when we play so I disappear
into the music….
What are your favourite musical genres, and are there any you dislike?
Dr Space- Space rock, psychedelic rock, classic 60-70s rock, southern rock, prog, and Afrobeat
are my faves. This is the music that I collect. As for dislike, pretty much anything that is played on
the radio today (pop, rap, hip hop).. This is just not for me..
How do you differ from most other artists?
Dr Space- I guess I differ from most in that I do not write music but do spontaneous musical
creations that some are good and some are not but I am learning all the time and pushing myself
to get better at everything. I also have many many collaborations around the world, probably more
than most musicians. Also, most of the bands, projects I work on are creating a lot of music via
improvising and this is what I do best.
How do you think your previous bandmates would describe you?
Dr Space- Dedicated, lots of energy, works hard….
What instruments can you play?
Dr Space- Primarily synthesizers….but I mess about with the marimba, different percussion
instruments that I have in the studio as well.
Where do you see your musical career in 10 years?
Dr Space- I am guessing I will be making less music and working more in the studio with other
bands but it is hard to tell. Music is my life and I keep very active constantly learning and pushing
myself. My band, ØSC, are celebrating out 20th anniversary in April 2025 and will release our 45
album! I am very proud of this accomplishment. Will be make it another 10?? Probably…
What would you say is your greatest strength as an artist?
Dr Space- I am not afraid to try something new and crazy and go beyond what I can technically do
as a musician.. It does not always work but I am willing to try.. I also work very hard for all my
projects.
What would you say is your greatest weakness as an artist?
Dr Space- My lack of ability to use social media to promote my music and bands. I hate it and do
not have a smart phone. I find it very hard to get involved with this side of being a musician.
Who is your favourite musician?
Dr Space- Guitar player, Frank Marino. Bass Player- Hasse Horrigmoe, Violin player- Jonathan
Segel and Simon House, Drummer- Tim Wallander (ex Ozrics, Agusa, ØSC), Synthesizer- Doug
Walker, Klaus Schulze.
What is your proudest accomplishment as a musician?
Dr Space- I guess having played on more than 120 albums!!

What interests or hobbies do you have outside of music?
Dr Space- I collect and listen to a lot of music and do a lot of organic gardening and love to grow
chile! I like to try as many new beers as I can and I collect the labels from the bottles and cans.
Who/How Came Up With The Band Name?
Dr Space- For ØSC, which started out as just some jam sessions with the members of Mantric
Muse (DK) and Bland Bladen (SE) across the Øresund bridge (separates Copenhagen and
Malmö), it was not hard. I am not sure who exactly came up with the name, me or Michael from
Mantric Muse?? But since we played Space Rock, were a music collective, Øresund Space
Collective just seem to fit well. Doctors of Space, was easy, as both Martin and myself have PhDs
and we were also playing space rock at the time, so we became Doctors of Space. As for Aural
Hallucinations, Matt and I were making very experimental music and I was mixing in field
recordings from a local musician named Luis Antero. This seemed like a good name.
Where have you performed?
Dr Space- I have performed all over Europe (every major country except Romania, Hungary, Italy
and Spain), 5 times in the UK, Las Vegas and of course here in Portugal where I now live
permanently.
Do you have any upcoming shows?
Dr Space- Yes.. We have our 20th anniversary shows in Copenhagen, Denmark on April 11-12th.
These are very special shows with a lot of old members joining us again. Check out web site for
details. We will also play the spaceboat in Hamburg, DE on May 23-25th, a couple of festivals in
Germany in July and a few gigs in August and Sept with ØSC as well.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
Dr Space- I sell nearly all my music thru the internet site, bandcamp, which is great. I am not very
happy about the low income we receive from the streaming services like shitify and you tube, etc..
but I have no control over this, sadly… They are taking our art and music and exploiting us. Sad..
One day there will only be shitty musicians and AI making music for people as the best can not
earn a living anymore.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
Dr Space- We need the huge artists to remove their music from you tube and shitify and demand
higher rates and hopefully this will trickle down the smaller artists. That would improve things.
What’s next for you?
Dr Space- We in a few days (march 20th) the Quasars of Destiny CD is released and the new
Doctors of Space- Fusing your Synapses CD. In April, ØSC will play the anniversary shows and
have our next studio album, Alotta hella down in Estrela out on CD and vinyl. Dr Space´s Alien
Planet Trip Vol 9 will come out later this year and I hope my collaboration project with Chino and Pepe from La Ira de Dios as well. I will likely have a new Dr Space release and one with Dr
Paradiso as well. Lots of new music coming out from the studio. Thanks for your time..
